dames en heren,
een goede namiddag en van harte welkom in Antwerpen.
Van harte welkom in de Stadsschouwburg
voor de openingszitting van uw driedaagse
Internationale Vredesontmoeting ‘Peace is the Future’.
Het is de tweede keer dat deze conferentie naar ons land komt.
De vorige keer gebeurde dat in 1992, in Leuven en Brussel.
Het verheugt ons bijzonder dat u ditmaal hebt gekozen voor onze stad.
Antwerpen is een historische stad.
Antwerpen is een stad van kunst en cultuur.
Antwerpen is een dynamische, creatieve en innovatieve stad.
Antwerpen is een open stad.
‘Peace is the Future’.
Eigenlijk heb ik daar niets aan toe te voegen tenzij de spijtige vaststelling dat er niet overal vrede is.
In Noord-Irak en Syrië,
in Oekraïne,
in Palestina en Israel
in grote delen van Afrika en
op zoveel andere plaatsen staat de wereld in brand.
Zelfs in onze eigen stad geeft dat aanleiding tot spanningen en tot opstootjes van haat, waarvan we echt hadden gehoopt dat ze tot het verleden behoorden.
Als godsdienst al niet aan de basis ligt van die conflicten, dan spelen religieuze tegenstellingen toch vaak een cruciale rol. De krantenkoppen van de voorbije maanden zijn bijzonder slechte reclame voor elke wereldgodsdienst met een boodschap van vrede en hoop.
Ladies and gentlemen,
during this International Peace Meeting ‘Peace is the Future’ all participants have the opportunity
- to prove the pessimists wrong;
- to show that the world’s great religions do offer hope and deliver a message of peace and tolerance;
- to emphasise that violence and terror are the trademarks of extremists and false prophets, and
- to show the world that even the most divergent worldviews can coexist without violence.
I realize that this sounds a little naïve, but when I look at a city like Antwerp, we immediately see that this is the only way forward.
In Antwerp we have citizens from 174 different countries.
We are the second most diverse city in the world,
after Amsterdam, but before New York or London.
Because we do not all share the same opinions, insights, ideologies or objectives,
living together is not always easy.
Sometimes there are frictions, sometimes there are conflicts.
Nevertheless, Antwerp wants to be a city where everyone can be himself or herself, regardless of color origin, race, sexual orientation, political opinion religion or whatever.
As a mayor I strive for a strong urban community that surpasses all these differences, so that what unites us, becomes more important than what divides us.
The International Peace Meeting ‘Peace is the Future’ is of particular importance for Antwerp, because our city itself is a unique laboratory for the coexistence of different groups, inspirations and backgrounds.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I wish the Community of Sant'Egidio a successful organization and all participants an inspiring conference, full of meaningful and engaging conversations and meetings with people from all over the world.
Afterwards, I hope that you will think back with pleasure to those three days in Antwerp.
I also hope that you will return home with positive feelings and that one day, somewhere in the future, you will come back to our city.
Be sure we will receive you as good old friends.
