He is professor of Contemporary History at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.
He has worked on the history of republican Italy, the relationship between the Italian State and the Church and the history of international relationships.
Editorialist and essayist, he supervises research projects with universities and historical institutes in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
He has participated in numerous cultural and interreligious dialogue initiatives in Japan, China and Indonesia.
He has been a member of the Community of Sant'Egidio since its foundation.
