He has been President of Guinea Bissau since 27 February 2020.
An exponent of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, he served as Prime Minister from November 2016 to January 2018.
He was President of Ecowas from July 2022 to July 2023. In that capacity, he visited Ukraine and Russia, bringing the voice of the entire African continent, concerned about peace and stability in the area.
