The President of Cyprus in Barcelona: "The aim of politics is pushing the limits of what exits. The religious leaders should remove mutual distrust and work for the right of everyone to live in peace."

Cyprus is a divided land, reached in 2008 by the "caravan" of prayer for peace led by the Community of Sant'Egidio. The President Demetris Christofias has also pointed to the Pope, who visited the island in June, expressing "hope that Cyprus could be a model of coexistence of civilizations." But Cyprus is a divided land, since more than 35 years, and President Christofias said: 'It is inconceivable that Cyprus and its people should remain divided. We have a duty to build a peaceful future and deliver a reunified country to the generations to come. A hospitable land for all its children: Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins."

Christofias also said that the task of politics is not to accept, but to overcome the limitations of the existing. "What should politics and politicians do in light of this situation? I will say it in simple terms: “supersede the limits”. For the President of Cyprus this is the task that the policy must face not only in the divided Mediterranean island, but throughout the world. However, "this task - said Christofias - not just on our shoulders, but also on those of religious leaders, who must  focus their attention to the noblest values, including the most important, the right to life and peaceful togetherness, without distinction based on colour, national origin and culture."
