Member of the Community of Sant'Egidio since its foundation, journalist, he was a Member of the Italian Parliament and President of the Social Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
He has chaired the Mediterranean Institute of Haematology.
He is the international coordinator of the Community of Sant'Egidio Campaign for a Universal Moratorium on Capital Executions and one of the founders of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
His new book on the successful experience of the Humanitarian Corridors shows the prospects that immigration opens up for Europe.
